Part two of this perspective on being a gracious weekend hostess comes with warm thanks to all my friends who have hosted me, from Palm Beach to Nantucket to the Hamptons…for the good times, their inspiring gestures and creative ideas.
Hostess Gestures
Kelli Delaney (founder of KD Hamptons) was arranging fresh gardenias in a pottery bowl when we arrived at her guest house in the Hamptons. An Oprah resource from way back, to this Southerner they are a divine and unexpected greeting!
Fly the flag. As seen so beautifully along Nantucket’s Bluff Walk.
Position a delightful, charming piece of artwork (yes, this is an entire painting, with the exception of the shelf!) near their room or at the end of the hall leading to the guest room.
Try to arrange for a full moon! After listening to an evening musicale in the Grand Hall of The Breakers, my houseguests and I walked out to the terrace to discover this enchanting sight…which capped off a heartwarming weekend.
When you are airing out the guests’ quarters, also light your favorite scented candle — the fragrance is so inviting for arriving guests.
Hang a plaque with a favorite thought or bit of wisdom to inspire; my Nantucket hostess positioned this under the window where I viewed the millions of stars each night.
What female guest wouldn’t want a special basket of luxury face and beauty products, specially curated for her to use now and take home? Newport’s own Farmaesthetics is who I turn to!
Create a cozy spot just for them outside their room or “casita.”
House Guest Gifts (and Notes)
If you have a talent with a paint brush, capture a favorite scene (or maybe the host!). My dear friend, Ruthie Watts, honors each visit with a small painting that I treasure, giving me an additional reason to anticipate her visits.
TIP: Ask your hostess what she would like done with the sheets and towels, before you start to strip your bed.

I ALWAYS DO THAT ABOUT THE BED SHEETS!!!!!!!!
LOOKS LIKE SOME GRAND TIMES………..your skirt is BEAUTIFUL!ADORE the color!
I always love your ideas, photos, parties and beautiful gardens and homes! This photo of you in a beautiful skirt and blouse is wonderful. Lucky you to have had such an inspiring, loving grandfather. I enjoyed these stories and paintings.
I would have loved to see you at Penny’s and Sue’s. Good times with Terry and Rennie still. I’d love to see you in Newport! Any chance you are coming to the GCA Annual Meeting in San Francisco?! I’ll be there as a “concierge” with the Seattle Garden Club.
