Seafair, designed in true Louis XIV style, was built to fit the curve of its own peninsula, jutting into the ocean. At the time it was completed (1936), this expansive jewel was the last of the large pre-World War II grand cottages to be built. Just 2 years later, the Hurricane of 1938 brought tragedy to the owners who had built it. Scoot over to today’s blog for the intriguing and terrifying story of why this beauty stood empty until the end of WWII, abandoned by the distraught owners who had barely escaped the wrath of the hurricane with their lives.

With the chill weather still putting the focus on staying home, I thought I’d share one of my favorite Newport grand residences, Seafair (1936). It’s only in recent years been converted to a single family residence again. And Yes! it’s now lived in by Jay Leno...but that’s not originally the source of its fame. That came way back in 1938, when a horrific hurricane sent waves over the slate roof of this stone mansion on its own peninsula projecting out into the ocean. Since then, the structure has been known locally as “Hurricane Hut.” Be sure to look out for this week’s blog on interior details and more intriguing history on this historic Newport property!
