Living with Style, The Newport Diary

Ode to Newport

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

By this point in the summer, Newport would already have been a beehive of activity–from large fund raisers to music festivals to sailing regattas –and house guests galore. But this is a different summer in tone and mood, a “getting along” season as I’m calling it, holding one’s breath and trying to remember to exhale. However, it’s still our beloved Newport, as pictured here. These images I’m sharing came to mind in no particular order, making them all the more genuine for their spontaneity.

Blue skies punctuated with dramatic white clouds…

and green lawns sweeping down to the water’s edge.

Misty morns and foggy afternoons.

Iconic old homes, passing on to the second generation.

Hydrangeas, in all the colors imaginable.

Garden gates and estate gates.

Bellevue avenue “gas” lamps.

Grand, majestic trees of all ages.

Gatehouses and stables.

Gardens that inspire.

And one day, a friend’s dearly departed brother’s initial in the sky.

Despite the challenges facing us, summer in Newport has been the welcome panacea we all anticipate. Hope you are staying safe and sane…

  1. One of the happiest times in my life were in Newport with my mother, now deceased. Your beautiful photos remind me of those wonderful days. Stay well and be safe. Ellen Easton

    1. So thrilled that this Ode brought back happy memories; those are the only kind one should have of Newport.

      1. Darling Betty. So many happy memories of being with you in GH&D and in Newport . Loving memories of your beautiful mother and that fabulous trip to St Petersburg for Thanksgiving. I enjoy your blog so much. It has been a time for reflection hasn’t it? Be safe .Love, Elsie

  2. Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos! I love visiting Newport and truly miss not coming this year 🌷

    1. And Newport missed having you! That is one reason I decided to create this blog; happy it was a “filler” until next year! xB

  3. Although I have walked by several of the scenes depicted in your lovely photos many times I can’t help but feel a twinge of sadness at the thought of not being able to visit Newport this year. I especially miss the Newport Flower Show and all the fanfare surrounding its arrival, the summer season underway, the drive along Ocean Avenue and, of course, dining on the harbor.Newport was always considered our “Cape” destination. I can’t imagine not visiting your beautiful city and yet here we are. Let’s hope we all stay well and be safe and next summer will be the start of something wonderful again.

    1. So beautifully expressed, Evie. Yes, I think we all want to believe that “next summer will be the start of something wonderful again!” xB

    1. Oh Kimmie, so glad to know you are here, even if we can’t get together (but do call us if something changes).

  5. Your focus on Newport garden and house beauty cheers up all of us.
Visiting friends always marvel at the strength and size of the large trees along Bellevue
Avenue, and some of the ancient tree trunks in sideway places.
Thanks for the memorial summer cloud on a special summer evening.

    1. “Cheering up” is what I was hoping to do…and myself at the same time; sometimes we just need reminding of why and what we hold dear.
The memorial summer cloud was something I shall never forget; how meaningful to share it with you1 xB

  6. I’ve been a part of “Newport’s Summer Season” since 2003.
This truly is our “Getting Along Season”.
Still, I’ll take Newport any day!

  8. Dear Bettie,

Jim and I are here on beautiful John Street. We walk and see a few of the beautiful scenes you have shared. We do miss seeing several of our older friends who have chosen to stay indoors or are quarantined in assisted living. They do love phone calls and news of friends!
Stay safe and walk this lovely town!
    Martie
