I spoke too soon in my last post regarding lack of exuberance in Newport’s leaf display. Exactly three days after that email, all of our trees literally popped at the same time– a crescendo of color that is breathtaking. Since fall is my favorite season, I was euphoric and the clear skies of cerulean blue as a backdrop made it all the more exceptional.
One of my favorite sights, which I was able to capture in two images, are the newly-dropped leaves creating vibrant carpets along Bellevue Avenue’s sidewalks.
As they do in our front courtyard (where we changed the driveway design to save the European beech, now on its own island in the circle).
Inspired by Sheffield Park in England, a few years ago I planted a selection of Japanese maples in the woodland along our border with Rosecliff. This fall the “flame border” that I had imagined is now starting to show off its charms.
Along the Avenue, Newport’s trees were providing examples of this spectacular fall in every block, pairing well with stone walls, lanterns, statuary…
And even a clock!
Sometimes, that fall splash of color can change your whole perception of a home that you’ve passed day in and day out, prompting you to see it in a new light.
Even a grand landscape can benefit from a shot of color.
A little bonus… a breathtaking gingko tree accenting a corner of Washington Square (where Bellevue Avenue, if you don’t consider its twists and turns, really ends).
Hope you’ve enjoyed a season of color, too.
Bettie, these pictures are breathtaking. Fall colors are the best! Spectacular.
thanks!
Fall colors are the best!! Perhaps that’s why it’s my favorite season…
Beautiful! Remembering the autumn color in Japan…
For sure, and yet I think the trees presented here were even more exceptional because of their diversity…though I could be happy with only Japanese maples.
Bellisimo.
Bettie, Another fabulous post! My memory may be failing me but it seems the colors this year are far superior to any I can remember in the last few years. Thanks for sharing the beautiful pix.
Exactly the way I feel, too, Barbara. And I don’t think it’s our imagination; that rain we’ve been cursing is probably the reason the color is so vivid!
Oooueee, Bettie….
The pictures and words each time just get better and better! Newport is EXQUISITE in the fall….
Love, love, love the carpets of leaves on the side walks and grounds.
Stunningly beautiful. Your photography is inspiring. Thank you.
So happy you enjoyed this post, Sarah. It almost photographed itself, the trees were so vivid!
Hello Bettie. . .
The gradation of color shown of one of the trees from top to bottom makes one want to set it to a piece of needlepoint or oils on canvas. . . absolutely magnificent. . .as natures Fall beauty is a wonderment for all to see. Thank you so much for sharing.
From one who used to paint needlepoint canvases, I can very much relate to what you are saying. Thank you for sending along your thoughts!

Oh Bettie, how I prayed a few days time would release nature’s glory Voila, I am not disappointed. How magnificent the display, manifesting the cycles of life, nature’s and ours.
