Having lived in Boston for a few years, I’m very partial to the term “Boston Proper” as describing the old in-town neighborhoods that included Back Bay, Beacon Hill, South End, etc. Over the next two posts, I’ll be highlighting some of the residential beauties that I’ve long admired…especially since their gardens and entryways are still enjoying the benefit of summer greenery.
An inspired, neat and low maintenance garden for any townhouse.
Grand, and grander!
Honey-colored, old wood details for this front door give it an enhanced presence.
The doorways and green details of “Boston Proper” are a wonderful story all their own!
What a romantic and inviting view from the street!
A front door view framed so handsomely by two trees.
Green additions to this setting are a welcome countrpoint to the very substantial architecture.
How enthusiastic is this for a small townhouse garden!
Cozy and elegant at the same time…and what a difference some greenery makes!
An unusual and very pleasing detail…substantial second floor windows opening onto a balcony that runs the width of the townhouse.
Hope you enjoyed a glorious end of summer…

Having lived in Boston for many years, I was delighted to see these photos….great job!
Fabulously entertaining, as always. Stunning entryways make me want to go to Boston.
Let’s go! Fall is a perfect time…xB
They’re all just beautiful.
I think I Have to agree, especially when you add in the greenery!
Dear Bettie,
Thank you for this feature of my old home town. I do miss the beauty of Back Bay and the stately townhouses.
Susie, so wonderful to hear from you! How’s “our” Bench? I’d forgotten that Boston was your old hometown.
Back Bay has never looked more beautiful and it brought back such happy memories to create this post.
All best to you, xBettie
