Often called America’s largest open house, “Historic Garden Week” in Virginia is a much-anticipated annual event for many garden lovers!
For one elegant week, both homes and their gardens throughout the state are opened to visitors. This lovely tradition began in 1927, and now approximately 250 homeowners participate in this successful fundraiser, sponsored by the Garden Club of Virginia (on an historic note, funds were originally used to save the trees planted by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello).
My visit included a perfect trifecta…Charlottesville, Orange, and Richmond (which is the subject of this post). Fortunately, there were a few picture-perfect days to enjoy all the prep that goes into this ages-old heritage. Can you imagine, not only your garden, but your home is on tour! I so admire my fellow Virginia garden clubbers who contribute their time and talent to make this event happen each year!
The additional charm in all of this glory is the diversity of the offerings…from the traditional Virginia red brick (see image below) to Thomas Jefferson-inspired Palladian architecture to stone Hansel and Gretel cottages to Italianate stucco manor houses. Capped off with masterful landscapes, cozy garden seating, azaleas in every color, and many horticultural notes to take home! Enjoy a taste of Garden Week in Virginia!

With such warm thanks to all my friends, both new and those I have known for many years, who made this magical week possible…

Bettie, Could you identify for us these different locations in Richmond?
It is a city dear to me from my days at St. Catherine’s.
Best regards,
Merrielou

How I love looking at the graceful gardens and architecture of my birth state. I have attended several garden weeks in different cities and never cease to be amazed at the natural beauty and the inspired enhancements of the creative gardeners.
Looks wonderful! Happy gardening.
