Though late to bloom this year given our wet and wonky summer, these Newport signatures never fail to make their statement…and complete many a landscape’s je ne sais quoi. Look no further than Marble House (above), where they stretch all the way from the house to the street…healthy and happy, flapping gayly in abandon and tossing their flowers in the welcome breezes. Masses of hydrangea hedges continue the beauty on the back terrace, breaking up the coolness of the gray-white marble with their large blossoms. (I can say as one who resides here year ’round, Marble House just isn’t the same without these blue beauties enveloping their front entrance).

Join me as I salute this iconic flowering shrub and its many faceted personalities, and design purposes.
Adding a romantic and whimsical vision to a grand Charles Platt Louis XV-style French mansion…the pair of “guard houses” at Bois D’Oré are well-dressed with vibrant purple hydrangeas.

Punctuating a garden vignette…

Complementing a blue-trimmed garage…

Adding amusement to Bellevue Avenue as these blue beauties grow bountifully through their gilded fence…

Setting off a harbor side guest cottage…

Cozying up an exceptional shingled-style home…

Making an extravagant statement with double rows of hydrangeas lining a full circular driveway….

Sharing their good looks with an historic estate’s formal garden…

Sweeping down a long entrance to a waterside cottage…

Welcoming you to a special property, whimsically named Bridle Path. Enjoy your summer of hydrangeas…

Awe inspiring!! What a delight!
Nothing says Summer like ebullient hedges of hydrangea. What does it look like off season at Marble House? I wonder if there are under plantings that could enliven the bare branches?
Looks like blue balloons waving to everyone to join the party!
These beauties are being celebrated and not taken for granted!
Isn’t that a sight to see! SO very beautiful…& they change to wine, etc. A lot of “Bang for the Buck!!” franki
LOVELY LADY,
YOUR PRESENT ‘SHARING’ – HAS BRIGHTENED MY DAY; ON TWO LEVELS.
THE FIRST: THE SIMPLE ‘VISUAL’ ASPECT OF YOUR SELECTION AND SETTINGS OF
THOSE MOST MAGNIFICENT EXAMPLES OF ‘FLOWERING’ NATURE.
THE SECOND: A BIT MORE … OF A PERSONAL ENLIGHTENMENT; THIS, AS TO LEARNING THAT NEWPORT IS YOUR SINGULAR RESIDENCE.
‘THOSE’ WITH ‘SEVERAL’ (HOMES), RARELY HAVE THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR GARDENS THAT IS SO OBVIOUS IN YOURS.
‘BEAUTY WILL SAVE THE WORLD’
TOM
Gorgeous and inspiring as always!!!
