Fall’s Fresh Occasions for Delight

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

From the greater parklike landscape to the tiniest garden container, this time of the year provides such a wealth of details. I find myself stopping the car as I wind up the driveway to study a specimen tree; arising early to get that cherished pic of the Cutting Garden in early morn (Feature image above); the roses and clematis ‘Durandii’ coming back into bloom, unexpectedly late in the season so all the more welcome. Yes, all fresh occasions for delight.

The Frenchiest of a petit wire garden chair (which I think I found on the side of a road…”someone’s trash is another’s treasure”).

Experiencing awe as I capture a poetic collection of clouds against a blue bird sky, a wonderful foil to the yellow dahlias.

The sunlight defining the myriad branches of the sweeping ‘Sophora Japonica pendula’ at the entrance to the front courtyard.

The MOST specimen of annuals…the chocolate cosmos, difficult to find and even more difficult to grow successfully, they have their own prime spot at the end of the Green and White Garden (they truly resonate of that namesake candy whenever you sniff them).

Again, in the Green and White Garden, just at the secret entrance to the Woodland Garden, the Cimicifuga plumes wait until this late in the season to strut their stuff.

While the old pair of stone urns have an unusual amount of moss covering both their top and plinths (containing my favorite fern, the ‘Mother Fern.’)

And finally…many of the pots used through out the gardens make their transition to winter by taking a rest in the Orangerie, one of the most serviceable buildings on the property (thank you, Jonathan, for this surprise gift 27 years ago when we were breaking ground for our new home xox).

Hope you are enjoying some fresh occasions for delight…

  2. LOVELY LADY,
THIS LAST ‘OFFERING’, FOR ME, IS ONE OF YOUR MOST MEANINGFUL.
YOUR MIND AND SOUL COME TOGETHER; TOTALLY IN TUNE WITH THE MAGIC-
    MOTHER NATURE’S BEAUTY CREATES.
YOU ALLOW US TO STEP AWAY, EVEN FOR A MOMENT, FROM THE TURMOIL
    OF OUR EVERY DAY WORLD.
    THANK YOU.

  3. I am so grateful for your generosity in sharing Pardee with us through your always fabulous photographs. It is truly a garden full of expansive beauty, but also of gentle delights, sometimes hidden, but wonderfully appearing at just the right time. I don’t think there is any time that your garden doesn’t reflect the beauty of Mother Nature and the love that you have for her! Thank you for the gift of this newsletter. Such a JOY to receive!
